Intensifying cereal management in dryland Mediterranean agriculture: Rainfed wheat and barley responses to nitrogen fertilisation

چکیده
Under dryland systems of the Mediterranean basin, water management is widely recognised critical for improving grain yield. It has been proposed that nitrogen (N) fertilisation may be a tool to increase yield by increasing use efficiency. We tested in multilocation-multiyear study four different areas Basin if durum wheat and barley respond positively N under rainfed cultivation. The involved 16 experiments including genotypes sown at Morocco, Jordan, North-eastern Spain, Southern Italy, with doses applied sowing or early crop development from 2003/04–2007/08 growing seasons. Grain increased 26% average years, locations species compared their respective unfertilised controls. response was noticeable low (< 2 Mg ha ?1 ) high potential cases (> 5 ). There were only exceptional slightly negative no responses fertilisation. number per unit area, not weight, main component related Also, total biomass maturity closely Barley responded similarly • N-fertilisation low-yielding regions. In we quantified conditions Basin. Yield consistently across seasons when fertilised, even very conditions. had similar performance terms both N.

Nitrogen Fertilizer Management in Dryland Wheat Cropping Systems
Wheat is the most widely cultivated food crop in the world, which provides nutrition to most of the world population and is well adapted to a wide range of environmental conditions. Timely and efficient rates of nitrogen (N) application are vital for increasing wheat grain yield and protein content, and maintaining environmental sustainability. The goal of this study was to investigate the effe...

The effects of five rates of nitrogen fertiliser applications on the performance of the cereal aphid Metopolophium dirhodum on winter wheat, within the range of rates recommended for UK crops, were investigated over two seasons in field-grown crops and also on plants grown in the glasshouse. Longevity was unaffected by the level of fertilisation, but aphid intrinsic rate of increase and fecundi...
